You have been warned about paper writing and group assignments, which could overwhelm college students during the month of December. And it would be too much during the spring semester. Literature students might have it worse, but they only need to think about those who are pursuing a dual degree. It should make you think about using your student discount card more often. You would not forget to go out and revel at the changing colors of autumn. This is one reason to embrace your student life.

Studying literature is more rewarding than arguing about New York's eclectic assortment of architecture (or the lack of). Architecture students would dispute it, but you would not have the time for it. This demanding course requires a positive mindset, and a grateful heart would be the prerequisite to it. When it would dawn on your, then it is time to get into the nitty-gritty of how to achieve a student-life balance (and smell the roses before it becomes too cold out there).

Count Your Blessings: The Perks of Being a College Student (as Well)

You do not have to fight your way onto the treadmill. You have not imagined yourself rushing to the gym in the afternoon, so you don't have to fight with the 6 PM crowd. Writing requires a sound mind and a fit body, which you can only achieve after sweating it out for thirty minutes or more. And you can do it anytime. It depends on your assignments and examinations, which would prompt some of your coursemates to quote about their favorite novelists. They like to walk, as the surroundings distract their minds. There is unpredictability in wandering, which could lead to a light-bulb moment or two. You could do the same thing in the gym, as you get lost in your thoughts after an intense workout. Just keep your headphone away.

You do not want to miss those discounts. You would miss this one long after you receive your degree.

A three-month long holiday is a dream. You must not start counting the days, as the term barely started.

The opportunity to travel on exchange. You must have heard some stories about students on an Erasmus change, who got messed up after a few months in their program. You did not get to know all the details, so there is a possibility that these students have grown to love the communal setting and the Mediterranean sun. And living in the (big city in the) northern hemisphere is a culture shock to them. It would not happen to you if you keep an open mind. It also helps if you see yourself embarking on an adventure. The right attitude would do it.

You will be delighted to learn something new every day. Household chore may not be counted as one, but college life is not only about your first taste of freedom. You must be responsible as well.

Skipping a lecture can be darn good. There are instances when you cannot attend a lecture. The deadlines and examinations overwhelm you, so you resort to procrastination. And then there are instances when you must recover from a hangover after a night of bar crawling. (If you do not live far from the beach, you must have attended a beach party.) If it is the latter, you can do it only once. Doing it again would be too much of a risk. You do not want to procrastinate too soon, but the next item could make you think twice.

You would love to cram with your friends. Misery loves company, and nothing could be better than panic cramming with your coursemates. Whether it is the discussion of the significance of water in a prose or why the audience does not get tired of dystopian setting, you would never find a noisier company than teenagers who have the same interests as you. The conversation could lead astray, as you talk about Joker and "Fight Club". You have to cut that discussion short and save it for another day.

You can read and study where you like. Familiarity can lead to boredom, which would follow with lose of interest. It could happen sooner to Literature students, so you must not believe that that silence could stimulate your mind. A little noise would spurn you to finish a few chapters of a novel, if not write the draft of your assignment.

You have all the time for your hobbies. If you are a film enthusiast, then you would have a blast. (Think about World Cinema.) If you are a huge comics fan, then you are likely to encounter some hardcore fans that have disdain for Martin Scorsese (and his disparaging remarks on Marvel films.) If you are a bibliophile, then you might learn about hard-to-find titles and its earliest editions. It should remind you of Arturo Pérez-Reverte, which you can suggest to your professor.

You will be surrounded by your people. And they will likely to end up as your lifelong friends.

One More Reason to Love the College Life

It’s a big, bad world out there, which your parents have told you so. Keep this mind whenever you’re about to complain about the daily routine of college life, if not the long hours in reading and writing. It may seem endless, but you would be doing it for a few years.
