10 Great Ideas for a New (College) Student Hobby

The new term is approaching, and you haven't thought about a new hobby to keep you occupied. Not that you have lots of free time, as you may have little (or none) of it during the weeks leading to Christmas, as well as the entire spring season. This would keep you sane while your exhausted brain couldn't think of one more paragraph. It should end the draft of your essay, but you have another deadline to think about. And the distraction might be the only thing to keep you going.

You must ponder the reasons behind this venture. Do you want to add this hobby to your CV? If you do, then you must adopt a professional mindset. Do you want to have your own (college) club? If you do, then think long and hard about the reasons. You may be unhappy about your experience with a particular club. There may be something that hold you back, but this very reason could backfire on you. What if three students sign up? You might come up with many reasons, which may cover up the fact that you must look at this situation differently. There's one more thing, though. Do you want an outlet? If you do, then try to think of good ideas.

Why Should It Interest You?

Running. Getting fit should put you in a good mood, which you would need it more (as the weeks go along). It also put you in great shape, which could help you cope with the stress that the coursework would bring during certain times of the term. You may have a problem with recruiting other students, who are too busy (or too lazy) to do such a thing. Blame it on time management. It doesn't mean that you must do it alone (unless you're a goal-driven teenager). Patience is easier said than done, but there won't be another recourse.

Comics. The stratospheric popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe should be good enough for a reason (and only one reason). It might make some female students think twice about joining, but you can encourage them. The Gotham City Sirens may not be a good start, though.

Books. The students of the English Department may pass it up, which is fine. Those who pursue a dual degree may react angrily, and you must not take it against them. (They write more essays than you do.) Whether you invite them or not, make sure that you would take about the titles that won't make it to the reading list. There might be a problem if it's "Dune".

Language. It won't be fun to learn a foreign language by your lonesome, as you might not be motivated to do it for long periods. Think about putting this dialect into good use when you go on a holiday. It should help you decide what language to study, and if you would be contented with fluency on a conversational level. You won't have trouble in finding the right students (to share your enthusiasm).

Movies. Netflix is a good alternative to Hollywood blockbusters, which should be good news for college students. It's one more reason for not buying a movie ticket. It should cost more, but you would make an exception on a Marvel (motion) picture.

Music. You could be eclectic with your preference or you rather narrow it down with one particular genre. The numbers don't count here.

Photography. This might be the only instance where you have total control over the whole thing. (Think of social media.) If your degree course requires creative endeavors, then taking pictures could help you. If you’re serious about this craft, then it may be beyond your budget. Make the most out of your mobile phone, as you imagine a digital camera instead.

Gadgets. This item would interest the geeks unless you’re interested in accessories.

Toys. There’s no need to be ashamed of putting your childhood toys on display. You could have a cuddle buddy when you need someone to hug. (Imagine that soft toy telling you that everything would be all right.) Space may be a problem if you’re fond of Lego blocks. It would help you in getting over writer’s block, though.

Board Games. You would need your roommate to participate in this game, but make sure that there won’t be a deadline (to lose sleep). It would be a perfect distraction, also the right material to bring out your competitive spirit. It depends if you win (or lose), though.

If You’re Thinking of Serious Matter

You’re thinking of extra money, as a huge chunk of your allowance goes to beer and snacks. And you worry about the source of money for your next meal. (You’re too proud to ask your parents one more time.) You’re considering a short stint on cleaning the dorm, also a tutorial. You’re embarrassed about the thought that your coursemate would find out.

It doesn’t matter if you’re not having fun (while the rest are). You need to worry about the coursework (and nothing else). You must think of a new hobby (and nothing else). You only have a few weeks left.
