Questions, questions, and more questions

"Prometheus" was one of the highly-anticipated films of 2012, but moviegoers were left with questions. Unanswered questions.

The crew of Prometheus, led by Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway, took four years to reach LV-223. This was what the star map would tell them, which they discovered in the highlands of Scotland. And it matched the other star maps from ancient cultures. The archaeologists thought the human race had their forerunners, which the duo would call the Engineers. The opening scene didn't tell much about their fate except for the dark liquid. The visual effects (by Richard Stammers, Trevor Wood, Charley Henley and Martin Hill) turned an intriguing premise into a compelling story. But it could only take the viewers to a certain distance.

It was probable that the Engineers intended to use the dark liquid as a biological weapon, but they lost control of it. What happened between Shaw and Holloway, who were a couple, might be the reason. (Some viewers may not like the sight of childbirth, and one particular scene might prompt them to leave their seats.) It wiped them off except for one. (Everyone who has seen the film would shudder at his fate.) Shaw didn't understand why the Engineers planned to dump the dark liquid into Earth, so she found herself in the cold galaxy once more. She wanted to set foot on the Engineers' world.

Ridley Scott announced that "Prometheus" would be the first of a series of prequels, which would end with "Alien" (1979). "Alien: Covenant", currently filming in Australia. is scheduled for release next summer. The premise didn't reveal Shaw's whereabouts, if she did survive the long journey (in outer space). If interest in the xenomorphs didn't wane through these years, then it will be due to Dan O'Bannon's eerie screenplay.

Here are some answered questions

Not a few suspected "Planet of the Vampires" as Scott's inspiration for "Alien". The title of this sci-fi horror film had nothing to do with blood-thirsty creatures, which Mario Bava would be remembered for. (If your answer would be "Bloody Sunday", then you may want to try Bloody Mary.) It was rather a distant planet of unseen forces, which would turn the Argos crew into homicidal individuals. No one knew the reasons. If Bava revealed it, then this film might not have achieved its cult status.

Scott employed the same approach in "Alien", where viewers don't have a clue on the fate of Dallas, the captain of the Nostromo, and Brett, the engineering technician. It turned out that Scott deleted a bizarre scene, where Ripley, the warrant officer, witnessed an egg morphing phenomenon. (This scene would appear in the Director's Cut version, which was available on DVD and Blu-Ray. So there.) The Xenomorph, which has insect-like traits, won't need a Queen to lay eggs. And this egg may contain produce the Queen Xenomorph. Brett's head was cocooned, the only part of his body visible to Ripley. Some viewers might have thought that he was being transformed into an egg, but it could also be his own body acting as a yolk for the growing egg. As for Dallas, he was alive and hurting. There was no doubt that he would be the host to the Queen Xenomorph.

Another mind-blogging scene was the rows of eggs. They seemed withered, even devoid of life. It would be probable that they have their own means of sending signals, such as an approach of a potential host. (Kane was the first to stumble into the eggs.) Scott didn't tell if the other eggs would be hardened in time. He might revisit it for the prequels.

The post-end credits scene of "Prometheus" revealed a Deacon Xenormorph bursting from the Engineer's torso. There was no doubt about similarities between him and the more-familiar Xenomorph. Is it possible that the Engineers' world would be infested with Deacon Xenomorphs? There could be more, and they could be found in distant moons. Let's say this is the right place to breed Xenomorphs. If you can't get enough of it, then you're not the only one.
