Which TV series deserve a reboot?
You must be a rare species if you haven't heard about ABC reviving "American Idol", but Showtime done something else. David Lynch and Mark Frost will write and direct "Twin Peaks", which will be on a limited series. FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan, would return to Twin Peaks, Washington. He will revisit a case, revolving around the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer.
The 1991 series was hailed by critics, even earned a cult following. No one was surprised about it, as Lynch was renowned for his surreal images on such lurid aspects in American society. He was also known for his campy characters, some of whom were too good to be believable. This approached clicked with "Mulholland Drive", one of the best films of 2001. Motion picture and television would be two different mediums, though. Moreover, small-screen viewers have less patience (or a short attention span). It doesn't come as a surprise that the second season was greeted with low ratings, prompting its cancellation. Showtime would be aware of it, which could be the reason behind the limited series. It will be anyone's guess if Agent Cooper's next saga in Twin Peaks will generate high ratings, but this can prompt many TV viewers to suggest other shows that are more deserving of a reboot.
Here's a short list:
Northern Exposure. A New Yorker was sent to practice in Alaska. This northern state paid for his college education, and the young doctor wasn't thrilled about it. However, the eccentric features of Cicely, Alaska would make him change his mind. It could be a case of traveling forcing him to get out of his comfort zone, if not the young doctor rediscovering Henry David Thoreau's “Walden”. CBS could revisit the icy landscape of Alaska, but they may be tempted to venture into Gothic fiction. (Think of “30 Days of Night”.) How about a distant view of the Aleutian Islands, a little-known volcanic chain not far from Anchorage? It would put a different spin on this planned reboot, which could turn out to be better than the first one.
In Living Color. Keenen Ivory Wayans should have thought of a reunion of his “In Living Color” cast mates, which wouldn't be difficult to do. After all, many of them were his equally-talented siblings. It would mark the return of Jim Carrey to the spotlight. (He made his big break in this show.) And there can't be a better time to think of a reboot. Americans need laughter more than ever, and Alec Baldwin's impersonation of Donald Trump might not be enough for them.
Quantum Leap. Some viewers might not welcome such a thought, pointing out the success of “Touched by an Angel”. There would be others who have been long-time fans of the Hallmark Channel. These people miss the point. It's about science for the greater good. It's also about amending mistakes from the past. It won't be a wise one, but no one would object to a happy ending.
