Your Hobby Will Get You a Job

An impressive resume must list down the skills that prospective employers are looking for. And educational background guarantees a job offer. But there are millions of students going to college. Such a high volume means competition among students in their final year.

If you happen to be on your final year, then you know you have to make your resume stand out from the rest. It means additional information. You don't have work experience. And you're not the only one with a B.A. degree. Try hobbies. It seems preposterous, but keep in mind that a resume is a marketing tool. There are no rules in presentation, as the goal is to grab an employer's attention right away. And making sure you'll get a call (or e-mail). Furthermore, the market is looking for applicants with many skills. It can be one of your interests.

Here are some samples:

If you are part of a sports team, then highlight your impressive results. Don't forget to emphasize those practice sessions you organize now and then. Employers will see a result-driven individual, which is good in any business. Moreover, they will guess a team player. And possibly a leader. It can be baseball, basketball, or football. It can be any position, where one is not less than important than the other. But it pays to be the captain.

Volunteering is good for you. Employers are not looking for corporate sense of responsibility, but rather the skills you learn, and develop, during the moments you devote for a cause. Many will admire you, not to mention your enthusiastic effort to enlarge your social circle. Who knows, one may be thinking of hiring you in the immediate future.

Never underestimate social media. You don't have to be critical of those who shamelessly promote themselves. In fact, this is how to do it. You're not the only one wanting to get the attention of employers, and they might not be patient. Think of YouTube in particular. It's the closest to a one-on-one encounter. And we're not talking about what you can show. It's all about first impression, but don't consider singing or dancing.

Show them your stamp collection. A hobby will reveal your commitment and enthusiasm, which any employer will like. They see someone who has a long-term goal. They also sense a proactive approach on your part. It's not only about passion. Maybe television might be an exception, unless you have a critical eye for details.

Books won't fail to impress anyone. Your knowledge can take you far. It's not about the B.A. English major students, as any idea will be useful sooner or later. It may help you during the job interview.
