Emma Stone's Winning Streak Continues

Tonight
Emma Stone was doing rounds of promotion for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2", which opened on May 2. Her most recent appearance was "The Tonight Show", where she challenged host Jimmy Fallon to a lip sync battle. After an underwhelming first song, there was no doubt on who was the winner.

"That was the best one that has ever been done on the show," Fallon said.

Gwen Stacy was Stone's biggest role to date. "Easy A", her breakthrough film, was the reason why she got the part. It was a modern update on Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter". Screenwriter Bert V. Royal pulled off an amazing feat, as adapting a dark romantic novel to the big screen was no easy feat. (Demi Moore can attest to that, as Roland Joffé's version, in which she starred, received overwhelmingly negative reviews.)

"The Scarlet Letter" told the story of Hester Pyrnne, who conceived a daughter through an adulterous affair. She refused to name the father of her child, so she must wore a scarlet "A" on her dress as a sign of shame. Hester was courageous, given the tenacity she showed, as it wasn't easy living during puritan time. It didn't take long for readers to realize that it was her love for Pearl, her daughter, and her father, that gave her strength.

This premise is no longer relevant in modern time, but Royal and director Will Gluck managed to walk on a tight rope. Perhaps it was the setting, a school attended by clueless teenagers. (Many of them, at least.) Stone's Olive Penderghast was one of the few sensible students, but a white lie would turn her into Hester. Stone's performance was praised, which it should. If not for her, "Easy A" would end up flat. Even if moviegoers have no idea that it was a modern version on Hawthorne's novel, they would notice the awkwardness of the story. But Stone and company pulled that one.

There may be no need to reboot the Spider-man franchise, after that trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire, Kristen Stewart, and James Franco. But the Marvel Cinematic Universe became a phenomenal success, after the box-office triumph of "Iron Man". Justice League can't be far behind, with Superman and Batman on the helm. What about Spider-Man? Anything is possible in the movie world. Andrew Garfield should have been born earlier, as his depiction of Peter Parker was spot on. (Awkward. Conflicted. Enthralled.) Stone would be the gal that won Parker's - and Spider-Man's - heart. The mid-credits scene, which revealed the superhero's next foe, indicated that there would be another trilogy. Garfield don't seem to mind.

"I can't even talk to you right now," Fallon said to Stone after she finished "Hook" by the Blues Traveler.

Stone's performance was impressive, but not good enough to beat Fallon's. Her final tune was "All I Do Is Win" by DJ Khaled and Ludacris. She amped up her game, hamming it up with her fierce facial expressions. Fallon had no choice.
