Time to Support Your Library

February 7 is National Libraries Day in UK. It was once called Save our Libraries Day, but many suggested a change a few years ago. Not that local libraries would be obliterated sooner or later. It was about time to give the libraries a fighting chance.

In case you're wondering if there's such a campaign in America, then you must wait until spring. (National Library Week will be held from April 12-18.) The only difference is Great Britain is a relatively small country, so they are able to organize this kind of event. You might have to check your nearest local library to know if your area marks this occasion. Don't be surprised if there'll be no shortage of activities in New England. After all, this is where Transcendentalism once flourished. The spirit of the movement still lives on, inspired by the likes of Henry David Thoreau. But let's stop short of comparing New England with England under Queen Victoria.

Libraries are not in danger of neglect. As a matter of fact, there are efforts to preserve it. But these institutions are becoming more and more irrelevant due to technology. Librarians have adapted to modern times, though. However, expect more students (and adults) to spend more time in front of the computer screen in the comfort of their homes. If not that, then the iPad. (The device is more convenient while traveling.)

It's time to break the apathy. If not, then think what your parents - and grandparents - have when they are young. Here are some suggestions:

Check out the other libraries. Be amazed to discover the other libraries in other parts of the world, the architectural designs more august than the ones you've seen. It reflects how these countries value their libraries. You don't need to be passionate about architecture to realize its significance. It's also not necessary that the travel bug will bite you (and prompt you to go to these places.) Libraries do built communities.

Take a look at your library. If your books, presumably paperback copies of novels, are piled up in one corner of your room, then you better pay attention on what you are about to read next. Every house must have a mini library. It provides a nice touch in every home. It doesn't mean that you give importance to the written works of authors, but it will be nice if you think that way.

Pay your librarian a visit. It's fine if you don't feel like dropping by your nearest library. Some of us look at it as part of our past, but time can change anyone's perspective. What if this latest visit will renew your interest in books.

Get in touch with fellow bibliophiles. If you want to take part in the campaign, or talk about books, then find someone (or some people) who share your passion.

Never throw your books. Ask your local library if they are interested in adding more titles to their collection. There are more people who need books (and you might be astounded at the figure.)
